Driving in Japan: most foreign visitors need an International Driving Permit (IDP) under the 1949 Geneva Convention. Carry it with your home licence and passport. Japan does not issue IDPs — get yours at home before you fly. Drivers from Belgium, France, Germany, Monaco, Switzerland, and Taiwan can use an approved Japanese translation of their licence instead.
