Eating in Kijimadaira and Iiyama — in the countryside between Nozawa Onsen and Madarao — is an adventure in itself. At first glance it all seems quiet: closed doors, dim lights, near-empty streets. But once you know what to look for, the signs are there — a signboard glowing under a warm lamp, a handwritten "open" note swinging at the door. Step inside, and you'll almost always find a full house.

Run by the same family for over 40 years, it has a homemade warmth that makes it our default choice for a clean, hearty meal — fluffy tempura, savoury broth in winter, and noodles with just the right amount of bite. It's a small shop that closes once sold out, so arriving early is strongly recommended.

Founded in 1904, Honda has been grilling freshwater eel (unagi) over binchotan charcoal for over a century, and the restaurant's reputation has spread well beyond Nagano. It's been listed among Japan's 100 best unagi restaurants, and regularly sees many domestic visitors come from all over Japan. The eel is broiled lacquer-glazed (kabayaki) and served over rice in a lacquered box — a simple luxury. Honda opens from lunch till 7pm, great for an early dinner.

Cafe Satowa is the resident cafe at Hana-no-Eki Chikumagawa, Iiyama's roadside station, serving Japanese curry and pasta for lunch with window views of Mount Kosha. It's a practical stop as well as a pleasant one — the same building houses the Iiyama Tourist Information Center, outdoor brand Montbell, and a grocery store stocked with local produce an agricultural souvenirs.
But the real reason to come: the Iiyama Banana Boat. This local icon predates the famous Tokyo Banana — fresh cream, real bananas, and earning that pinnacle Asian compliment: not too sweet. Don't leave without one.

Worth it, though. Saturdays serves good quality wafu Italian (Japanese-style Italian) in a quaint, lofty house tucked into a residential enclave — the kind of place that feels like a discovery. Queues form up to 30 minutes before opening; reservations aren't accepted, and groups are capped at 5. Open for both lunch and dinner — check Google for current opening days and hours before you go.
